Spell Research

Any spellcaster may create a new spell, but with any new spell the player must write a full spell description and submit it to the DM for approval and adjustment before a spell can ever be researched; any submitted spell may be rejected, adjusted, or accepted as is. The researcher needs access to a well-stocked research library; creating a personal research library requires the expenditure of at least 500 gold guildas, which includes a sturdy room with a compliment of books necessary to conduct fundamental research.

The researcher can work on only one spell at a time, and can do nothing else while researching it, outside of light activity. Before research begins, the researcher must be able to conceive the workings of a new spell, requiring a spellcraft check against a conception DC of 15 + spell level. The researcher may attempt this roll only once per spell per level, and can never take 10 or 20 on the check.

If this roll is successful, then the researcher may proceed with spell research, spending the time and money indicated on the table below. At the end of that time, the researcher must make another spellcraft check against a research DC of 20 + the minimum caster level required to cast the spell being researched. At a cost of 5 gold guildas per week, the researcher may spend additional weeks researching a spell to gain a cumulative +1 to the spellcraft check for every week the research is extended. This decision must be made before the spellcraft check is made, and the researcher can never take 10 or 20 on the check. If this roll is successful, the spell is complete and immediately available to the spellcaster.
